What the average US wedding costs, and why the number may not apply to you
You will see one headline number quoted everywhere. There are actually two, they measure different things, and neither is a target.

The two numbers
The Knot's press release also reports an average cost per guest of $292. Its figure describes weddings that already happened in 2025. Zola's describes couples planning 2026 weddings. They are not the same measurement, so they should not be averaged.
| Source | Average cost | Average guests | Who was asked |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study (press release, Feb 2026) | $34,000 | 117 | 10,474 US couples married in 2025 |
| Zola 2026 First Look Report (Mar 2026) | $36,000 | 145 | More than 11,500 couples marrying in 2026 |
Why an average can mislead
- Both surveys reach couples who use wedding websites, which is not every couple.
- A few very large weddings pull an average up. Many couples spend less than the average.
- Costs differ a great deal between cities and between seasons.
- The average wedding in these surveys has well over 100 guests. Half the guests is close to half the venue and food bill.
A better starting point
Start from what you can pay without borrowing, not from the national figure. Then divide your own number by category and get real quotes in your city. The average is useful for one thing: checking that your expectations for a given guest count are in a realistic range.
