Hidden wedding costs: the fees couples say they did not see coming

Most couples who go over budget do not do it with one big decision. They do it with lines that were never in the first quote. Two surveys from this year show how common that is, and which lines they were.

How often budgets break

The two numbers differ because the questions and the couples differ. Read together they say the same thing: going over is the usual outcome, not the exception.

SurveyFinding
The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study (10,474 couples married in 2025)41% went over budget, 34% stayed on track, 4% came in under, and 21% never set a budget
Zola 2026 Wedding Spend Survey (720 couples, within six months after the wedding)69% exceeded their initial budget

What the surprises were

In Zola's survey, three in four couples ran into at least one fee they had not expected. Hidden costs added $3,314 on average, about 9% of what those couples spent in total. The ones named most often:

The venue service fee

In the same survey, 57% of couples faced a mandatory venue service fee. It is usually a percentage of the food and drink bill, so it grows with every guest and every upgrade. It is also the line where published guides disagree about whether it includes the staff's tip. Ask, in writing, what it covers.

Why the first quote is low

  • Quotes are often given before tax and before the service charge.
  • The venue price depends on what is included. In The Knot's study, 74% of venues included rentals, 41% catering and 37% alcohol; only the venue you are looking at can tell you which.
  • Overtime is priced per hour and only matters if the day runs long, so nobody mentions it.
  • Small recurring items never get their own quote: stamps, alterations, trials, vendor meals, tips.

Seven questions that surface most of it

  • Is tax included in this total?
  • Is there a service charge, what percentage is it, and does it go to the staff?
  • Is gratuity expected on top?
  • What does overtime cost per hour, and when does the clock start?
  • Are there delivery, travel, setup or breakdown fees?
  • What is not included that most couples end up adding?
  • What happens to the deposit if we change the date, or if you cancel?

Hold something back

If hidden costs run near 9% for the couples who meet them, a budget with no slack will break. A buffer that you do not assign to any category gives those lines somewhere to land. The exact share is your call: one published guide suggests keeping at least 5% untouched, and more on a tight budget.
